This adult Ring-billed Gull has been returning to the same stretch of seafront at Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex since it's discovery, by me, in March 2000. The bird is probably a male and is always the first in line for any bread that may be thrown out to entice him in. In autumn he generally arrives back from the beginning of August and is in generally a tatty state. Shotly after arriving he drops is outermost primaries. It is customery that when he returns he goes a wandering and can go missing for several days however by October/November he is usually to be found opposite the Rossi's Ice Cream parlour, hence his name. Only very occasionally has he been found anywhere else. He generally leaves the area by the third week of March but may sometimes linger on into April

The best time to look for 'Rossi' is between 2-4 hours either side of high tide when he can be found on the mud and groynes of the breakwater. He also has two favoured lampposts. Low and High Tides are not the best time to look for him and success is greatly reduced by visiting here at these times.
